Violence in schools – A roundtable discussion

Uploaded at: 2011. 10. 31.

On the 25th of October, 2011, starting at 5.30 pm, the Criminology Student’s Circle of the ELTE Faculty of Law held a roundtable discussion on conflicts, violence and conflict management in schools. The invited guests were: Tamás Lajos Aáry ombudsman of educational rights and Borbála Fellegi researcher.

The discussion saw roughly 15 participants from the university’s students. Among the subjects were the personal characteristics of the attacker and victim children, the role and responsibility of teachers, family backgrounds, and the role of families. The participants also examined the role of legislation in cases of school violence and wheter or not it lives up to the expectations, talked about latency, and possible solutions in the cases of school violence, emphasizing the importance of alternative conflict handling mechanisms.

By the end of the discussion, the participants agreed that the quality of everyday communication is a key element, since school violence is only the tip of the iceberg made up of countless everyday interactions between teachers, studnets and families. In order to lessen the agression we need to improve these interactions with trust, real partnership, more reflecting upon ourselves and others, paying attention and listening, praising and opportunities to share our questions and mistakes in a safe environment.
